X’s encrypted DM feature, XChat, is rolling out more broadly | TechCrunch

X has been waiting for it for a long time Encrypted DMS functionalityXchat is becoming more and more extensive.

Although functional Shipping In May’s Beta, Xchat now has access to more users, including those who don’t subscribe to X Premium.

Separated from existing DM inboxes, XCHAT is end-to-end encrypted. The chat system supports media uploads, group chats, fixed messages, and the ability to mark messages as read or unread. There are rumors that the disappearing pattern is also in progress.

Currently, only users choose to use it can access XCHAT. On the desktop, some users can access XCHAT from the Messages tab. There, you can navigate to Chat from the menu option that shows “Message Request” above. On mobile devices, “Chat” appears in the main navigation bar on the left, just above the community.

Before using XCHAT, you have to set up a four-digit code to protect your messages, similar to other encryption platforms (such as Signal). Only after you set up your code can you start sending messages to other selected users.

For now, Xchat is not a complete replacement for long-term replacement of long-term DM systems. Instead, these messages now appear under the Unencrypted tab in the chat menu.
