Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old college dropout, is charged in the shooting death of Charlie Kirk and faces aggravated murder in Utah.
State prosecutors plan to accuse Mr Robinson of aggravated murder, felony release of firearms, causing serious bodily injury and obstructing justice in capital/first-degree felony next week.
Mr. Robinson was detained and booked in Utah prison Friday when his father and a family and friend were both ministers and court security officers who he referred him to authorities.
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said Mr. Robinson “pleaded guilty” to “a family friend,” who then contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
The sniper’s bullet hit Mr. Kirk, 31, who gathered with students on the Utah Valley University campus, the climax of the chasing of the suspect was hit by Mr. Kirk, 31.
Mr. Robinson’s release was not released on bail.
It is not clear whether prosecutors will seek death penalty for him.
Utah is sentenced to death for a deadly injection or shooting squad. Only one prisoner has been executed in the past 15 years.
President Trump called for a death sentence on Friday for the suspect.
Mr Cox called the shooting a political assassination, saying in a news conference Wednesday: “I just want to remind people that we are still sentenced to death in Utah.”
