U.S. Postal Secretary Louis DeJoy notified Member of Congress On Thursday, he signed a deal with the General Services Administration and the Elon Musk government’s Department of Efficiency to cut 10,000 workers and billions of dollars from the U.S. Postal Service budget.
In a letter to Congress, Dejoy said the Post Office’s business model was broken and that financial sustainability was unsustainable without urgent need and core changes. ”
“Repairing a broken organization that suffered nearly $100 billion in losses and expected to lose another $200 billion without bankruptcy proceedings is a daunting task,” Dejoy wrote. “Determining strict legislation and over-regulated organizations as large, important, cherish, misunderstand and debate as the U.S. Postal Service makes it even harder with such a broken business model.”
Doge will assist USPS with $78 billion a year in addressing “big issues” and has been working to make ends meet in recent years. The agreement is designed to help the postal service determine and achieve “further efficiency.”

“It’s consistent with our efforts, just like we’ve accomplished a lot, and there’s a lot to do,” Dejoy wrote.

Critics of the deal fear that the negative effects of the cuts will be felt throughout the United States. U.S. Rep. Gerald Connolly, a Democrat in Virginia, was sent to the letter, saying that transferring the postal committee to the Governor would result in its destruction and privatization.

“The only situation for the postal service is more than Dejoy’s ‘Providing the U.S. plan to hand over the service to Elon Musk and Doge, so they can destroy it, privatize it, and then profit from Americans’ losses,” Connolly said in a statement.
He added: “This surrender will have catastrophic consequences for all Americans, especially those in rural and difficult-to-reach areas, Tesla owner. ”

Brian L. Renfroe, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, said in a statement to Thursday’s letter that they welcome any help from anyone to address some of the agency’s biggest problems, but firmly opposes any move to privatize the postal service.
“Common sense solutions are what postal services require, rather than threatening the privatisation efforts of 640,000 postal employees, 7.9 million jobs related to our work, and universal services rely on Americans every day,” he said.
USPS currently employs about 640,000 workers, responsible for the islands from inner cities to rural areas and even far away.

The service plans to cut 10,000 employees over the next 30 days through a voluntary early retirement plan, the letter said.
The agency previously announced plans to cut its operating costs by more than $3.5 billion. This is not the first time a layoff is made. In 2021, the agency laid off 30,000 workers.

Services operating as an independent entity since 1970 have struggled to balance the decline of books with first-class emails, which fought against phone calls from President Donald Trump and others and privatized them as a privatized capacity.
Last month, Trump said he could put USPS under the control of the Department of Commerce, which would be an executive acquisition.
