University of California drops diversity statements in hiring amid threats of Trump cutting funding

University of California (UC) Has become the latest well-known school to remove diversity statements from its recruitment practices.

On Wednesday, the university’s provost Katherine S. Newman sent a letter to the system’s leaders informing them that new applicants no longer need a diversity statement.

Newman wrote that while certain programs and departments require them, the university never sets a policy for diversity statements and believes it could harm applicant assessments.

Almost half of all college students in the United States refuse mandatory DEI courses on campus:

“The requirement to submit a diversity statement may result in applicants focusing on one aspect of their candidate’s expertise or previous experience.” Fox News Numbers read.

She added that employees and applicants can still refer to achievements related to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) alone, but independent diversity statements are no longer allowed.

Janet Reilly, the UC Board Chairman, said in a statement to Fox News’ digital numbers that the university will continue to respect its commitment to “embrace and celebrate Californians, celebrating from a variety of life experiences, backgrounds and perspectives.”

UC follows Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and University of Michigan As elite universities begin to expand their DEI programs, eliminating diversity statements.

The news came a month after being sent to education departments in all 50 states in a letter from the Department of Education’s Civil Rights Office, warning them to Eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) Policy or risk legal consequences, including loss of federal funds.

The Trump administration has $400 million in grants raised Earlier this month, the school failed to address the rising anti-Semitism on campus.

While the school is not clear about these factors that decide to remove the diversity statement, UC President Michael Drake Also announced System-wide recruitment freezes and cost-saving measures before significantly reducing state budgets and any potential federal challenges ahead.
