The 2025 World Happiness Report was recently released this month – revealing that the United States lags not only behind other countries in North America, but also behind several European countries.
The study, published annually by the Center for Welfare Research at Oxford University, usually ranks highly on Nordic countries. The subject of this year’s report is “The impact of caring and sharing on people’s happiness,” the study said.
Some factors, including inequality, generosity, freedom, life expectancy and perceptions of corruption, contributed to the rankings – but researchers seriously weighed a problem related to happiness.
“Our global happiness rating is based on a question that requires people to evaluate quality of life on a scale of 0-10,” the website explains.

Although it was ranked 11th most blissful in 2011, the United States has ranked lower in research over the past few years. The study also ranked us as the 115th Free Country, and the researchers asked participants: “Are you satisfied or dissatisfied with choosing your own life?”
Despite its low ranking of happiness and freedom, the U.S. GDP is still $76,276 per capita, ranking fourth in GDP. The United States also ranks 12th and 16th in social support and generosity.
The study notes: “The increasing number of people eating alone is one of the reasons for the decline in American welfare.

On the other hand, Finland has been ranked highest in the World Happiness Report since 2018. The study considers its “universally available and high-quality health, education and social support systems” and concludes that unequal welfare inequality in the country.
“Our annual happiness rating is once again led by Nordic countries, with Finland still number one among them,” the study’s key insights concluded. “Nordic countries are also the first among the expected and actual returns of the expected wallet.”
