During his speech in the seventh state, Whitmer alerted Trump’s plan to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, prompting the White House to open fire.
“Whitmer seems to have made a bigger defense of the Canadian governor against the deadly status quo, with Chinese fentanyl poison slaughtering more than one million Americans in our northern and southern borders,” Peter Navarro said in a statement to Fox News’ digitalization. “Even if President Trump will stand up for the U.S. auto industry, this will once again prosper under Trump’s tariffs.”
Trump’s tariff plan Given its shared border with Canada and Detroit’s leadership over the U.S. auto industry, it will affect Michigan. Whitmer has identified economic development and trade with Canada as key priorities for her state this year.

“Event leaders and highest economic thinking on both sides of the aisle warns us that this destruction is that a 25% tariff will cause to the automotive industry in Michigan while raising daily expenses for families,” Whitmer continued. “I am grateful to Republican, Democratic and private sector leaders for their voices over the widespread tariffs in our neighboring countries. Because we know that saying no to Canada means saying “yes” to China.”

Trump confirmed on Thursday that his proposed 25% tariff plan will take effect next week as “drugs are still pouring into our country in Mexico and Canada.” He said the tariffs will begin on March 4 “until it is stopped or severely restricted.”
Trump said to Truth Society: “…The proposed tariffs planned to come into effect for the fourth time in March will come into effect as planned. This date will also charge China an additional 10% tariff. The date of the second mutual tariff in April will remain in full force and effect.”
Earlier this month, Trump issued a 30-day pause on the 25% tariff plan for Canada and Mexico after negotiations on border security and drug trafficking with North American leaders.

“I’m very happy with this initial result, and the tariffs announced on Saturday will be suspended within 30 days to see if the final economic agreement with Canada can be constructed,” Trump announced.
Whitmer said on Wednesday that she was grateful for the president’s initial pause on Mexico and Canada’s 25% tariffs.
“As I said before, I’m not against tariffs. But when the Michigan economy is online, they’re a blunt tool.” “Tariffs on everything will slow down construction, shutter small businesses, lead to layoffs in the automotive industry and add an additional $1,200 a year for Michigan households in stores and pumps as companies transfer their higher costs to consumers. It’s going to be a disaster.”
Whitmer said she asked Michigan how she felt about the tariffs and received 3,000 written responses within 48 hours, who were worried about the price increase.
“For them and every Michigan state, let’s continue to illustrate smart trade policies with a voice to improve the competitive environment and ensure that the U.S. works without paying costs. On tariffs and every issue, Michigans want us to work together in Lansing because that’s how things are done.”

Trump swears Save the automotive industry In his inaugural address, he established a key campaign commitment made during the Michigan rally last year.
“Through my actions today, we will end the new green deal, we will revoke the mission of electric vehicles, save our automotive industry, and maintain a divine commitment to our great automated positions in America,” Trump said in his inaugural speech.
Trump put forward his vision for U.S. auto manufacturing at the Detroit Economic Club in October 2024.
“My goal is to see our auto manufacturing industry be bigger than its quality, and for Detroit and Michigan, it is the center of action. For generations, the city and state are the capital of global automobile production.”
Michigan politicians criticized him for calling Detroit a “developing region” in his speech.
“If she was your president, our entire country would end up being like Detroit,” Trump said of former Vice President Kamala Harris.
Whitmer fired last year: “He didn’t know what he was talking about.
Trump argued in the same speech that his tariff agenda will end using foreign leaders The automotive industry in the United States.
“Detroit was destroyed by foreign troops,” he said. “It was a foreign army that invaded us, but like you did from babies, it was a group of merchants, very good merchants, who took the candy out of our pockets. It was easy for them. The factory was left in the ruins.”

“When foreign leaders and CEOs call me to complain about our tariffs, my answer will be very simple: Build in the United States, you don’t have any tariffs. Just build it in Detroit, you don’t have any tariffs. Build it in Dearborn or Lansing, Grand Rapids or Grand Rapids or Flint, you don’t have any taxes.

Trump also promised to lead the Michigan Miracle and the Rebirth of Detroit.
“By the end of my term, the whole world will talk about the Michigan miracle that is about to happen and the amazing Detroit rebirth,” Trump said.
