President Donald Trump On Thursday, pay tribute to the hero dogs who “defend our citizens and our homes.”
National K-9 Veterans Day is the annual celebration of “Dog Courage” on March 13, Military and police dog bravery.
“These fearless four-legged fighters are a valuable part of protecting America on the frontline, on the combat zone and on our borders,” Trump said in a message on Thursday.

According to the White House, more than 30,000 “dedicated working dogs” in the military (with 1,600 working dogs actively serving) provide frontline support to U.S. service staff.
The soldiers were trained to detect explosives and drugs and assisted in search and rescue operations.
Famous military working dogs include Army Special Operations Forced Dog Conan – 50 new combat veterans named after late-night talk show host Conan O’Brien, who helped track down Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi when he was killed in Syria in October 2019. Conan was injured in the mission but recovered completely.

In 2019, at the White House, Trump gave Conan, who was assigned to the first special forces to the action super-transcendent. The dog was later adopted by his pre-processor and died in 2023.

Trump also nodded to Cairo, a now-dead SEAL six-man operator, who played a major role in the raid that killed Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in May 2011, while Marine veteran Rex “saves countless lives by detecting explosives in battle in Iraq.”
The German Shepherd serves with the Legion CPL. Megan Weafty, his heroic service to dogs, was portrayed in the 2017 film’s eponymous character.

“When we remember the fallen people, we thank all the brave veterans of the K-9 Corps who protect the American people and our way of life, and are named after the best friend of mankind,” Trump said Thursday.
