Trump remains optimistic about odds of acquiring Greenland: ‘I think it’ll happen’

President Donald Trump Although Greenland says it is not interested in becoming a part of the United States, the United States will still receive Greenland

Trump’s remarks coincide with the visit of NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. The United States acquires Danish territory.

“I think this will happen,” Trump told reporters Thursday. “And I was just thinking, I haven’t thought a lot of ideas before, but I’m sitting with a man that might be very useful.

Rut said he didn’t want to weigh the trade-offs on this matter. However, he agreed with Trump that Chinese and Russians are actively involved in transportation routes near Greenland, and stressed that Arctic countries must work with the United States to protect the security of the region.

“But when it comes to the North and the Arctic, you’re completely right,” Rut said. “The Chinese are using these routes now.”

Trump has discussed months of buying Greenland, Canada and Panama, and often calls Canada the 51st state in the United States. In addition, Trump asserted in a joint speech in Congress on March 4 that the United States will acquire Greenland for national and international security.

“I also sent a message to the incredible people in Greenland tonight,” Trump said. “We strongly support you in determining your future rights and we welcome you into the United States of America if you choose.”

“One way or another, we will get it,” Trump said. “We will keep you safe, we will make you rich, and together, we will take Greenland to new heights.”

Greenland has abundant natural resources, including oil and gas, and both Russia and China have strengthened their presence in the region in recent years. For example, the U.S. Navy released a “Blue Arctic” strategy in 2021, warning that Russia is reopening its old bases in the region and urges maritime services to operate more actively.

Trump discussed the possibility of expanding U.S. territory for months and said in the December 2024 Society of Truth: “The United States of America believes ownership and control over Greenland is absolutely necessary.”

Meanwhile, Greenland leaders in a Denmark territory overturned Trump’s comments on members of Congress.

“We don’t want to be Americans, nor Danes, we are Caralit (Greenlanders),” Greenland Prime Minister Múte Egge said in an article translated by Reuters. “The Americans and their leaders must understand this.”
