Welcome to record: President Donald Trump is suing the New York Times for defamation, seeking $15 billion in damages, part of his latest attack on the free media.
How to say the lawsuit? Trump claims that three articles published by The New York Times in 2024 were written to undermine his campaign at the end of the election, and the lawsuit named the two journalists’ publishers and the publisher of a book as the publisher of two journalists as co-defendants.
The lawsuit also includes descriptions of Trump’s career, including his “magnificent real estate achievements” and “his”Sui Generis Charm and unique business acumen. ”
The Times said in a statement that Trump’s lawsuit “lacks any legal legal requirement, but rather attempts to stifle and block independent reporting.”
What is the goal of litigation? Theoretically, the lawsuit aims to recover damages for what it describes as “false, malicious, slanderous and derogatory” reports. In fact, complaints and compelling claims for damages are best viewed as part of Trump’s larger pattern of behavior, designed to curb legal, critical reporting on Trump’s life, campaign, and administration by U.S. news organizations.
Will Trump succeed? Almost certainly not. Defamation lawsuits against public figures must reach an extremely high standard, called actual malice, in order to succeed, and truth is an absolute defense.
What is the overall situation? Trump’s attacks on the media are designed to force his administration to better report. He has previously sued ABC and CBS for coverage, thus extracting multi-million-dollar settlements, and he filed a lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal and its owner Rupert Murdoch, looking forward to $10 billion.
On Tuesday, he told ABC reporter Jonathan Karl that the Justice Department might “follow people like you because you treat me so unfairly.”
