For others, especially those trapped in schools that fail to run cities like New York and Chicago, the New Year will bring failure and disappointment.

It’s no surprise that Chicago schools have performed poorly, and the system suffered 41% of chronic absenteeism in 2024, considering Illinois’ transcripts. To make matters worse, the city’s teachers’ chronic absenteeism rate is also about 41%.

Recent contract negotiations with the Chicago Teachers Union began with union bosses making 700 requests, an estimated cost of $10 billion. Since 2021, 11 Republican-led states controlled by the Republican Legislature have adopted policies that provide parents with educational options, including public, private, charter or family education options. Increased competition will raise the bar; public schools will no longer receive free passes.
