Tiktok will close its Instagram rival Tiktok on May 8. Photo Sharing App Tests were conducted in Canada, Australia and Vietnam last year.

The company is notifying Tiktok users of their decision to retire the app and direct it to BOCTEDANCE owned Lemon 8it’s not surprising considering that these applications are very similar and offer the same functionality.

“We are pleased to bring Tiktok Notes feedback to Lemon8 as we continue to create a dedicated space for the community to share and experience photo content, designed to complement and enhance the Tiktok experience,” a Tiktok spokesperson said in a statement to TechCrunch.

While Tiktok doesn’t offer a specific reason to close the app, it’s likely that the company didn’t see too many adoptions from Tiktok Notes and decided to push for Lemon8, which is around Lemon8 12.5 million monthly active users worldwide As of December 2024.

exist Tiktok pays attention to user notificationsTiktok said the decision to close the app “was not easy to make”. The notification encourages users to download and save their Tiktok annotation data and “continue to share your creativity on Lemon8”. “Lemon8 is a lifestyle app that provides a similar experience to Tiktok annotations,” Tiktok said, but with “more features.”

The Lemon8 was launched in Japan in 2020 and later expanded to markets in the United States and Southeast Asia. The app is similar to Instagram and Pinterest because it allows users to share slideshows, photos to collect and browse content through “follow” and “for you” feeds. Lemon8 gives users access to creative tools, filters, effects, stickers, text templates, and more.

While Tiktok uses Lemon8 as an alternative to Tiktok Notes, Bytedance also attempts to position the app as Tiktok itself, facing potential U.S. bans.

Last November, the company made users possible Direct access to Lemon 8 With their Tiktok account and launching the ability for users to cross-share photo content between apps. The move was seen as a way to get the barbarians to move creators to the new platform without having to register separately in case Tiktok disappears.

Fast forward to today, Tiktok continues to promote Lemon8 in its app as it faces new Prohibited deadline April 5.
