Former Openai CTO Mira Murati announced her new startup. Not surprisingly, it focuses on AI.
Called Thinking Machine LaboratoryToday is the startup that emerged from invisible to build tools to “make AI for [people’s] Unique needs and goals” and create a “wider understanding, customizable and more extensive” than currently available systems.
Murati is working as CEO of the Thinking Machines Lab. Openai Co-founder John Schulman He is the chief scientist of the company, and NakedOpenai’s former judicial research officer is the CTO.
In a blog post shared with TechCrunch, Think Machine Lab writes that despite the sharp improvement in AI capabilities, the “critical gap” remains.
“The scientific community’s understanding of Frontier AI systems lags behind rapidly evolving functions,” the blog post reads. “Understanding how these systems are trained in top research labs limits public discussion about AI and how people use AI effectively Capabilities. And, despite their potential, these systems are still difficult to customize their specific needs and values.”
According to the blog post, Thinking Machines Lab plans to focus on building a “multi-mode” system that “works with people” and can “adapt to the full human expertise and enable a wider range of applications.”
“[W]e is the modeling of capabilities in areas such as science and programming. “The blog post says. “Ultimately, state-of-the-art models will unlock the most transformative applications and benefits, such as achieving novel scientific discoveries and engineering breakthroughs. ”
AI security will be another core purpose of the work of the Thinking Machine Lab. The company said it plans to contribute to security by preventing abuse of the models it publishes, sharing best practices and recipes on how to build secure AI systems with the industry, and supporting external research by sharing code, datasets and model specifications. External research.
“We will focus on understanding how systems create real value in the real world,” Think Machine Lab wrote in its blog post. “The most important breakthroughs often come from rethinking our goals, not just optimizing existing metrics.”
I started thinking about the machine lab with a team of outstanding scientists, engineers and builders. We are building three things:
– Help people adapt to AI systems to meet their specific needs
– Develop a strong foundation to build more capable AI systems
– Promote…– Mira Murati (@miramurati) February 18, 2025
Murati left Openai last October after six years at the company. At the time, she said she was walking away and “exploring for herself.”
Murati came to Openai in 2018 as Vice President of Applied AI and Partnerships. After being promoted to CTO in 2022, she led the company’s work chatgpttext to image AI dall-eand code generation system codeit powered earlier versions Github’s co-pilot Programming assistant.
Mirati briefly served as CEO Interim CEO of CEO Sam Altman Sudden launch. Ultraman describes her as a close ally.
For months, Murati’s rumors have hired high-profile AI researchers and staff to conduct AI businesses. Thinking Machine Lab’s blog lists 29 employees from OpenAI, Role AI and Google DeepMind, among other top companies.
Under the company’s position, Think Machine Labs is actively hiring machine learning scientists and engineers as well as research program managers.
It is said that at one time, Murati was in talks to raise more than $100 million from a venture capital firm that wanted to be named. The blog does not confirm or deny this.
Before Openai, Murati spent three years at Tesla, working as a senior product manager for automaker crossover SUVs, during which time Tesla released an early version of Autopilot, which was its AI-aA-Sable driver-sassistance software. She is also the vice president of product and engineering Jumping exercisea motion sensor for PC startup building finger and finger tracking.
