Federal agencies still have to appoint chief AI officers as ordered by the previous administration. While Biden’s administration wants these officials to ensure institutions use AI responsibly, their main role in the current administration is to act as “AI advocates” to promote AI adoption within scope. “The role of chief AI officer of the agency is redefined to act as a change agent and an AI advocate rather than overseeing the level of bureaucracy,” the White House said. OMB said the accountability of using AI will be more similar to the existing process of using it in administration, rather than creating a new layer of approval. “In addition, the new rules remove what the new government calls a “heavy agency reporting requirement” to acquire AI in the government.
The government now wants federal agencies to develop AI strategies in the next six months.
