President Donald Trump’s administration faces a new lawsuit that argues that the government threatens to withhold hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funds Columbia University It is illegal.
The American Federation of Teachers filed a lawsuit Tuesday with the American Association of University Professors, arguing that the Trump administration is seeking to “consolidate power over higher education.”
“This action challenges the Trump administration’s illegal and unprecedented efforts to overwhelm the university’s academic autonomy and control the ideas, associations, scholarships and expressions of its faculty and staff,” the lawsuit reads.
“The Trump administration is forcing Columbia to bid and make speech and expression on campus by holding billions of dollars in federal funds authorized by Congress, which is the funding responsible for positioning the U.S. university system as a global leader in science, medicine and technology research and ensuring it remains the case.”

The lawsuit filed Tuesday in the southern region of New York called on the court to demand that the Trump administration resume “all grants and contracts granted to Columbia University.”

It also urged the court to ban the Trump administration from further cutting funds and to compensate plaintiffs.
