About 12 protesters demonstrated in support of former Columbia student Mahmoud Khalil was arrested Tuesday after they clashed with New York City police.
Immigration law enforcement Khalil, a permanent U.S. resident, was arrested in New York on Saturday, and he was transferred to an immigration detention center in Louisiana after the Trump administration tried to revoke his legal status and deport him from his involvement in anti-Israel protests on campus last year.
The White House said Tuesday that Harrier distributed a Hamas flyer on campus.
“This is a person who organizes group protests that not only destroys college campus curriculum and harasses Jewish American students and makes them feel unsafe on their college campuses, but also distributes pro-attack propaganda flighters with Hamas logos.”
U.S. District Court Judge Jesse Furman ordered Khalil to be eight months pregnant, but his wife was not deported when the court considered a legal challenge raised by his attorney, who argued that the government had committed illegal retaliation for constitutionally protected remarks. His attorneys want him to bring back to New York and release under supervision.

The store noted that earlier, about 350 protesters headed to the Federal Plaza Immigration Court from Washington Square Park, who shouted anti-Israel slogans and called on Khalil’s freedom.
The protesters shouted, “There is only one solution, the uprising revolution.”
The group was trying to give a speech in front of the federal court building in the middle of the street when the New York Police Department told them to continue walking. When protesters tried to enter City Hall Park, police stopped them and forced them to turn around.
Protesters say Khalil was criminalized for his freedom of expression. They also said he was a “political prisoner.”
Protesters shouted: “The Trump administration and co-conspirators Columbia University believe that if we separate us from this key cornerstone of the community, our movement will begin to collapse.”
The officers also clashed with protesters outside the Gracey Building to protest against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who holds Iftar – Muslims fast every day during Ramadan as they demand Khalil’s release.

Free speech groups and other civil rights groups criticized Khalil’s detention as a violation of his First Amendment rights to freedom of speech, saying the Trump administration is seeking to curb speech that disagrees with.
“This is the United States. We won’t put people in detention centers because of their politics. Doing so betrays our nation’s commitment to freedom of speech,” the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression said in a statement.
