Democracy in Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs Plans to expand border security operations in four border counties in the state, focusing on undermining Transnational Criminal Organizations (TCOs).
Hobbs signed an executive order on Tuesday to establish Desert Guardians Operation, a joint task force that worked with local law enforcement, sheriffs and the federal government to undermine the Yuma, Pima, St. TCO operations in Ruth and Cochis County.
“I am proud to launch Operation Guardians against the cartel, stop drug smuggling and human trafficking and secure Arizona’s borders,” Hobbs said. “My administration has been related to the federal government and local sheriffs. Its key goals and our shared commitment to keeping criminals and drugs out Arizona Community. ”
Hobbs added that the operation’s goal will include identifying and mitigating security breaches along the southern Arizona border, which extends about 370 miles while also combating border-related crimes committed by the TCO. Hobbs said that for this purpose, the joint task force plans to remove the TCO supply chain and operational network.

The funds for the Desert Guardian Operation will come from a portion of the state’s border security fund, which has a balance of $28 million.
The operation will also be based on task force security efforts (stop the fentanyl epidemic in Arizona), joint operations between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Arizona National Guard to block drugs from entering the port of entry to Arizona .
Since its launch in July 2024, Safe Task Force Safe has intercepted 19 million fentanyl pills, 6,598 pounds of illegal drugs and 237 weapons at the border.

“I have worked effectively with the federal government on the security of the task force and with local law enforcement to provide critical border security support and I look forward to continuing to work with our shared border security priorities. “With the Desert Guardian action, I believe we can take an important next step in the ongoing work to secure the border.”
Hobbs said Arizona will not launch a massive expulsion campaign with its “misleading” plan to help the incoming administration after President Donald Trump is re-elected in November.
ABC News asked her if she would reset it on the border, and her response was to focus on current partnerships with the federal government to ensure border protection.

“I really hope that this partnership will continue and the incoming government will not only listen to my government, but also the experts on the ground, the people who are working, what needs most and what we are most. State Republicans have a different plan, Republican state Senate President Warren Petersen, a Republican, proposed the “AZ ICE Act” which would require the Sheriff’s Department and the Arizona Department of Corrections to be with Immigration Sign a cooperation agreement (ice) with customs law enforcement.

The agreement is based on 287 (g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows ICE to delegate certain immigration functions to state and local law enforcement personnel, including the identification and detention of suspicious illegal immigrants.
Peterson’s bill will also require law enforcement to comply with Ice Detention Centers, a requirement to notify Ice when illegal immigrants release illegal immigrants from state or local custody. “Sanctuary” jurisdiction does not comply with detainees.

Some local jurisdictions have committed support for these measures, but other officials have committed to either boycotting or failing to comply with any planned eviction actions.
