For many years, Sony has been in the first generation of WH-1000XM series headphones with active noise effects. Depending on the year, and the recently released Bose headphones, they usually land on top or near the top of our best noise sales headphones review.
Not only do they have a great noise performance, they also sound great. Our reviewers described them as “spacious and well defined, so every chain of recordings is easily identified and isolated.” Due to the high level of detail, they work with a variety of different musical styles, especially in the mid-range where other headphones sometimes struggle with it. Highs and lows are also clear, allowing for top-notch clarity and responsiveness.
They are always only 250g and are very comfortable, making it an excellent choice for common flyers and noisy commutes, although they may be a little sweaty. They have Bluetooth and 3.5mm connectivity options and pair capacitive touch controls with excellent apps. While not mandatory, both iOS and Android’s free apps have settings to adjust the settings for equalizer and active noise policy.
The biggest difference most people will notice between the older XM5 and the newer XM6 is the foldable design, which helps newer models squeeze into a more compact carry-on bag. The XM5, however, includes a compact carrying case, which should be great for a medium backpack and briefcase.
When we reviewed the Sony WH-1000XM5, we noticed that the price relative to other models is the biggest drawback, and we have complained about several iterations of the WH-1000XM headset.
