The Senate Finance Committee is scheduled to vote later this afternoon to raise President Donald Trump’s draft pick to lead the Medicare and Medicaid Services Center Dr. Mehmet Oz for a comprehensive Senate confirmation vote.
The vote comes after two hearings from the committee, which investigated his plans for the federal health program, his views on abortion, potential conflicts of interest in the healthcare industry, and more.
If confirmed, OZ will be responsible for nearly $1.5 trillion in federal health care spending. Medicare, a Federal Health Care Program According to the Medicare Advocacy Center, for elderly people aged 65 and over, there are currently coverages for approximately 65 million Americans. Medicaid assists low-income people to reach about 72 million Americans, according to Medicaid.gov.

A former cardiac surgeon saw his reputation on daytime TV appearances and 13 seasons of the “Wife of Oz” show Open Senate seats in Pennsylvania In 2022. He eventually lost to John Fetterman, the state’s then-lieutenant governor.
Oz graduated from Harvard University and received a degree in medicine and business from the University of Pennsylvania.
As a CMS administrator, OZ will make decisions related to how the government covers procedures, hospitalizations and medications in federal health care programs, and the reimbursement rates for health care providers to pay for their services.

Earlier this month, Trump’s draft picks led the NIH and the FDA, Dr. Jay Bhattacharya and Dr. Marty Makary, Approved on the committee respectively and are currently awaiting a full confirmation vote in the Senate.

Around the same time Bhattacharya and Makary won committee approval, Trump withdrew his nomination for former Florida Rep. David Weldon, fearing he has no Republican support to clear the full confirmation.
On Monday, the Trump administration appointed Susan Monarez, currently acting director of the CDC, as the new nominee.
