President Donald Trump signed a long-awaited executive order at the White House on Thursday to begin demolishing the Department of Education, limiting campaign commitments and holding a congressional showdown.
Trump has repeatedly vowed to close federal agencies and return school power to states during his 2024 campaign. Education DepartmentHowever, Congress was created in 1979 and could not be unilaterally closed through executive action. It can only be formally removed by Congress bills.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon acknowledged that the agency will face some hurdles in the coming months, but promised to work with Congress to complete the work.
“We almost spent it $3 trillion. We have seen our scores continue to drop. We did something wrong. We need to change,” she said in an interview with the Special Report on Thursday.
“I want Congress to be a partner in it, and I believe they will be because both sides of the aisle know that because we fail to fail students, what happens in our country’s education is allowed to stand.”

Data from the national education progress assessment, commonly known as the U.S. transcript, shows that the math level for 4th graders is 39% and 8th graders is 28%. The reading ability was 31% and 30% respectively.
Democratic lawmakers issued a statement shortly after Trump’s executive order was signed, condemning his decision.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck SchumerDN.Y. said the move would only hurt students. “The terrible decisions made by Donald Trump will be felt by teachers, parents, school leaders, and the quality of education we receive. Property taxes across the country will increase, and many schools will be declining in quality.”

McMahon told Fox News chief political host Bret Baier Trump administration I hope students can improve and have more opportunities.
“We want to provide a better education for children. The president is definitely a champion of school choice and we will work very hard to make sure that children are not imprisoned in failed schools,” she said.
“I do think going back to basics is the best way to do it. We need to teach mathematics, English, literacy and writing. We don’t need to teach ideology. We have to get teachers to teach.”
