President Donald Trump signed a long-awaited executive order at the White House on Thursday to begin demolishing the Department of Education, limiting campaign commitments and holding a congressional showdown.

Trump has repeatedly vowed to close federal agencies and return school power to states during his 2024 campaign. Education DepartmentHowever, Congress was created in 1979 and could not be unilaterally closed through executive action. It can only be formally removed by Congress bills.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon acknowledged that the agency will face some hurdles in the coming months, but promised to work with Congress to complete the work.
