Schumer refuses to step down as Senate Dem leader, defends shutdown vote

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, DN.Y. refused to resign from his leadership as the internal struggle of democracy worsened while the party struggled to agree to challenge President Donald Trump’s message.

“Look, I’m not resigning,” Schumer said in a pre-recorded interview that aired on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. “I know there’s a lot of controversy when I vote for the government shutdown.”

Schumer defended why he chose to vote for the Republican resolution to avoid a government shutdown, despite widespread opposition from Democrats.

“CR is of course bad, you know the ongoing solution, but the shutdown will be 15 or 20 times worse. Under shutdown, the administration has the only authority to determine what is “essential”. They can be determined without any court oversight.

“And there can’t be any stopping it,” Schumer said. “So, I think it’s so devastating for the Republic and angered a lot of people.”

Schumer played a key role in urging Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 game, denied that he acted likewise in his call to boycott partisan resignation. Democrats are increasingly criticizing Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, DN.Y. Support for ongoing solutions, and Schumer dismissed the report. “It’s a vote of principles. Sometimes when you’re a leader, you have to do something to avoid the real danger that can get stuck, and I’m out of faith in what leaders should do and the right attitude toward the United States and to my political party, Schumer said, “Acknowledge, consent to each other, our consent is everything else because our consent,” it’s “different,” it.”

He added that Democrats “have no leverage points” because Republicans who control the two homes may vote on CR. “When you’re on that political mountain, the higher the climb, the more violent the winds are,” Schumer said. “The only way you’re no longer blown off the mountain is your internal gyroscope…I have to do the right thing for our country and our gatherings.”
