Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, DN.Y. refused to resign from his leadership as the internal struggle of democracy worsened while the party struggled to agree to challenge President Donald Trump’s message.
“Look, I’m not resigning,” Schumer said in a pre-recorded interview that aired on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. “I know there’s a lot of controversy when I vote for the government shutdown.”
Schumer defended why he chose to vote for the Republican resolution to avoid a government shutdown, despite widespread opposition from Democrats.
“CR is of course bad, you know the ongoing solution, but the shutdown will be 15 or 20 times worse. Under shutdown, the administration has the only authority to determine what is “essential”. They can be determined without any court oversight.

Schumer claims there is no evidence that Trump, the administration’s efficiency chair Elon Musk and the office of director of management and budget Russell vs. He would cut funds for snapshots, food stamps and mass transport and cut Medicaid “to 20, 30, 50, 80%”, and he suggested that the government could decide during the government shutdown, “We will pursue social security. We will follow veterans.”
“They’re going to kill the federal government,” Schumer said. “Their goal is just to stand out from the federal government so they can get more taxes in the billionaire class over there. So it’s going to be devastating.”
“There is no ramp,” he added. “Who is sure how long the shutdown will last? Only those evil people are at the top of the Trump administration’s executive.”
Schumer told NBC that a Republican senator close to the Governors told one of his Democratic colleagues that the government would keep the shutdown in place, “six months, nine months, one year, until everyone is on leave and resigned.”
“And there can’t be any stopping it,” Schumer said. “So, I think it’s so devastating for the Republic and angered a lot of people.”
Schumer played a key role in urging Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 game, denied that he acted likewise in his call to boycott partisan resignation. Democrats are increasingly criticizing Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, DN.Y. Support for ongoing solutions, and Schumer dismissed the report. AOC chops Schumer as “huge mistake” gets stuck in Republicans to avoid government shutdown
“It’s a vote of principles. Sometimes when you’re a leader, you have to do something to avoid the real danger that can get stuck, and I’m out of faith in what leaders should do and the right attitude toward the United States and to my political party, Schumer said, “Acknowledge, consent to each other, our consent is everything else because our consent,” it’s “different,” it.”
“Our core group unites every step of the battle with Donald Trump,” Schumer said. “Our goal to unite is to make Donald Trump the fastest lame duck in modern history to show how bad his policies are.”
“He represents the oligarch, and as I said, he hurts ordinary people in every way.” Democrats are using overseeing hearings, courts and organizations across the region to challenge Trump’s agenda.
“I believe that by 2026, Republicans in the House and Senate will feel like they are rats on the sunken ship because we’ve followed Trump and all the horrible things he’s doing,” Schumer said.

“At the end of the day, what we get is the horror of avoiding the shutdown,” Schumer replied.

He added that Democrats “have no leverage points” because Republicans who control the two homes may vote on CR. “When you’re on that political mountain, the higher the climb, the more violent the winds are,” Schumer said. “The only way you’re no longer blown off the mountain is your internal gyroscope…I have to do the right thing for our country and our gatherings.”
