Rosie O’Donnell Her surprising bond with convicted killer Lyle Menendez is open.
Lyle, 57, and his 54-year-old brother Erik Menedez, are currently in jail in San Diego, where they served their sentences without parole after being found guilty of murdering their parents Jose and Mary “Kitty” Menendez in 1996.
During an interview New York Times O’Donnell, 63, published Saturday, shared details on her friendship with Lyle and how they communicate in prison.
“He started calling me regularly through his tablet phone stuff,” she said. “He would tell me about his life, what he did in prison, for the first time in my life, and I felt safe enough to trust and vulnerable to love a straight man.”

While talking to The New York Times, O’Donnell shared that her relationship with Lyle began Menendez brothers The trial in 1996.

O’Donnell admitted that some of her friends “expressed concern” about her unlikely relationship with Lyle.

She told New York State that when her friend told her she “shrugged” that he was the murderer’ Lyle is in prison.
During the visit, Lyle told her a plan that he and his fellow prison inmates helped train and place blind, disabled veterans and children diagnosed with autism.

At Lyle’s advice, O’Donnell decided to raise a dog for her 12-year-old son, Clay, who is autistic. She “spents two weeks of commute to prison every day,” and then takes home a Labrador mixture called Kuma, who was once trained by a prisoner to serve armed robbery.

“I immediately noticed the difference in clay,” she told the New York Times. “I was shocked to find that all the stories I heard from mothers of other autistic children were real.”
This experience inspired O’Donnell’s shooting Documentary The project, titled “Releases Hope: The Power of Autism Service Dogs”, will debut on Hulu on April 22.
