Robert Redford Once he learns that he is not familiar with him or his films, he is initially attracted to Sibylle Szaggars.
The legendary actor died on Sept. 16 at his home in Sundance, Utah, at the age of 89, his representative told Fox News Numbers. The love story between Redford and Szaggars began decades ago on those hills in Utah.
In 1996, the German-born artist met Redford while on a ski trip at his friends at Sundance Mountain Resort, eventually becoming the same location where he established the nonprofit Sundance Institute to support independent filmmakers.

In 2014, Szaggars got a little bit about their first encounter.
“I know him,” Szaggars recalled during the discussion National Youngarts Foundation. “I’ve seen Jeremiah Johnson, ‘one of my favorite movies, and ‘Barefoot in the park’. But I also have to say: I’m not a filmmaker, I’m not a filmmaker.

Szaggars said Redford invited her and a group of her friends to spend a day on the hillside. “Oh my god, I don’t know about his movie,” she recalled her thoughts.
A friend of Redford told her that she could rent some of his movies at the reception. She rented a few and watched the short bursts of six to eight movies she rented, because the star would bring any of them, but he didn’t.
“I thought, ‘What if he wanted to talk about his movie?’ I don’t know – it’s awkward.
Redford also attended the group and admitted that it was one of the traits that Szaggars attracted him.
“That was one of the things that attracted me – she didn’t know me.”

“So we start with a more even place of competition. I don’t have to worry about any agenda. I’ve experienced it before. It’s a wonderful beginning of a relationship because it starts with two people meeting and finding a connection between one person, not a connection between two people, not coloring by success or anyone else,” Redford said at the time.
He married in 2009 before falling in love with Szaggars, and Redford married Lola Van Wagenen. The two ended in 1958 and later divorced. Redford and Szaggars have no children of their own, but she became the stepmother of Redford’s children from her marriage to Van Wagenen.

Redford and Szaggars have kept their relationship private over the past few decades, rarely making any public comments about their romance. Before the end of the 2009 end, Redford spoke with German magazine Bunte about their engagement.
“We’re very happy with that. She’s my fiancé, and that says it all, doesn’t it?” he told the magazine in 2008.

Redford and Szaggars stick to their privacy themes, making their wedding very small, inviting only 30 friends and family. They were at the Louis C. Hotel in Hamburg, Germany.

Szaggars is 21 years younger than Redford.

Redford and Szaggars both wore white during the event and posed for photos.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox Shortly after Redford died, he went to Instagram to articulate his life in his own state.
“Decades ago, Robert Redford came to Utah and fell in love with the place. He cherished our landscape and established a legacy that made Utah a home for storytelling and creativity. Through Sundance and his love of conservation, he shared Utah with the world.”
“Today, we respect his life, his vision and his lasting contribution to our state.” Cox captioned a photo of Redford on a horse in Utah.
Redford’s representative shared a statement with Fox News Digital on September 16, confirming his death.

His representative said: “Robert Redford died on September 16, 2025 at his home in Sundance on the hills of Utah, where he loved and surrounded by those he loved.
Hollywood idols are known for classics like “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “The Sting”.
