A Prime Minister Los Angeles restaurant faces a strong online rebound after one of its owners appears to express his and his wife’s support for Elon Musk in an article The New York Times.
Walter Manzke, who owns République with his wife, Margarita Manzke, quotes articles about the Tesla Cafe that Musk plans to open in Santa Monica Boulevard, which “sounds exciting” for a restaurant, Tesla’s restaurant, Tesla charging radio and movie theater.
He also pointed out that his wife is a fan of Musk.
“She told me the other day that she wanted to buy a Tesla, so I can tell you which side she is on.”

The restaurant posted on Instagram the day the article was published, denying that the statement hints at political support for Musk.
“At République, we believe in focusing on what we do best – creating great food and enthusiastic experiences for all our guests,” they wrote. “In response to a recent New York Times article, we want to clarify that the offer on buying a Tesla is simply exploring the options of electric vehicles, not political statements. We value innovation and sustainability, and we respect all opinions. République does not take a political stand; we are here to create a space for everyone, no matter what, no matter what, whether they or beliefs.”
Soon after, the position was removed.
République is the backbone of Los Angeles dining venues, a French bistro that is usually the “best” list. Since opening in Hancock Park in 2014, the restaurant has typically ranked in the top 10 in the Los Angeles Times list of 101 Best Restaurants.
Walter Manzke did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and Margarita Manzke declined to comment when the Times reached it.
Musk began planning Tesla Café in 2022, when his company first submitted documents to the city of Los Angeles for a diner who operates 24 hours a day in Hollywood.
