Republican Rep. John James announces run for governor: ‘Make Michigan great again’

James posted in the announcement: “Faith and Family. God and Country. First. Michigan First.”

James said, “our country suffered enough pain” and said they were blocked by “lack of strong, competent leadership.”

“For the past seven years, Michigan has been subject to radical, adverse policies that have hurt our families, our communities and our economy,” James explained in his reasons for running for governor.

James said the state has lost 300,000 manufacturing industries since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which he equates to nearly a third of its industrial base, saying “this is unacceptable.”

“It’s time to get Michigan’s government out of the fantasy world and back to common sense,” James wrote.

James promised: “President Trump and I have been in a narrow and thin angle between each other, which is why eight years ago.

James was first elected to Congress in 2022, becoming Michigan’s first black Republican congressman, representing the state’s tenth congressional district.

If elected, James will also become Michigan’s first black governor.

He previously ran for the Senate twice, losing to Debbie Stabenow in 2018 and to Democratic Senator Gary Peters in 2020.

“Make Michigan great again,” James wrote in a previous article about X, sharing a video of Rapid Response 47 about MI’s Rapid Response.

Zach Bannon, spokesman for the National Republican Congress Committee, said James’ announcement is good news for the continued growth of Republicans.

“Republicans occupy Michigan’s tenth congressional district as we retain and develop a majority in Congress. Michigan rejected the radical agenda of losing contact with the Democrats in 2024, and they will do it again in 2026,” Bannon shared in a statement.

Bannon points out both President Trump Rep. James won Michigan’s 10th District by more than 6% in 2024.
