There is no thermostat in the U.S. Capitol.
Thermometer only.
That’s why Congressional leaders work hard to lower the temperature of Congress after murder Charlie Kirk.
As an experienced Congressional journalist, I lost the effort I witnessed to try to “reduce the temperature around Capitol Hill” after a national tragedy.
Oh, they might be here and there for a few weeks, sometimes with the help of the political cold front (e.g., a lengthy congressional recess). But like meteorology, political storms sound. Weather system development. There is dipping sauce in the jet stream. Drought swept the political landscape. The Alberta Clippers play in November and December. All of this leads to inevitable melting. So, after some comfort, usually soon after, only a Category 5 hurricane stirred up on the Capitol Hill coast.

The temperature then jumps.
In meteorology, there is always a temperature “regulation”. Yes, August climbs in Washington, D.C. in the mid-90s was seasonal. However, in the mid-1970s this year, it was not unheard of. These are exceptions.
The same goes for Congress. Typical “seasonal” temperatures on Capitol Hill always rise to 100 degrees. Even on cold calendar days in January and February.
Witness: There was a raucous plot on Capitol Hill in the mid-1990s Republicans Grasping control of the house, he almost fell into a boxing battle. A national tragedy has no stimulation range. This is an election. This intensifies the inherent distrust between Republicans and Democrats. It was strengthened by Republicans winning control of the House for the first time in four decades in 1994.
The results of the ballot box triggered these small-scale conflicts. But it was the violence and disaster that shocked many of the embers on Capitol Hill.
Members tried to calm down after two Capitol police officers were shot and killed in 1998.
But the temperature has recovered.
The same goes for 9/11. The fourth plane that eventually crashed in Champsville, Pennsylvania was destined to be the U.S. Capitol. After the direct threat subsided, members of both parties gathered on the steps of the Capitol and spontaneously sang God Bless America.
In one of the most terrifying days in American history, that moment was an indelible and exciting moment.

But the temperature has recovered.
Tea Party protesters siege the Capitol in 2010 Democrats Trying to pass Obamacare. Evil phone calls and threats flooded the Congressional phone lines. Legislators called for calming down to silence the sulfuric acid.
But the temperature has recovered.
A gunman killed six people in 2011 and seriously injured former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and future Rep. Ron Barber.
Members reiterated their comments.
But the temperature has recovered.
Capitol police were injured in a high-speed chase around the Capitol building during the 2013 government shutdown. Legislators have once again demanded calm. In fact, lawmakers found the injuries (but not paid) of their officers who worked to protect their officers were so sober that they pushed them to reopen the government.
But the temperature has recovered.

People calmed down.
But the temperature has recovered.
On January 6, 2021, the riots at the Capitol were one of the heaviest days in Congress’ history. The leader once again insists on peace.
But, in the early hours of January 7, shortly after the house reunited, there was almost a battle in the back of the room.
The request for you appears again.
But the temperature has recovered.
House Speaker Mike JohnsonR-la. is the latest congressional leader, facing a difficult task of temperature after the hard killing of Kirk. House members lowered their heads in a moment of silence. When Johnson laughs, R-Colo. Rep. Lauren Boebert asked Johnson to pray verbally. She said the silent prayer was not resulted.

“Can anyone lead us at a moment when Charlie and his family pray loudly?” asked Bobert as Johnson tried to change the room.
She also referred to “Victims of Colorado,” referring to a shooting at a Colorado high school the same day.
Boebert filled the room with complaints and moans as he tried to speak.
“Wait a minute. Wait a minute,” Johnson told Dyce. “The house will be in order.”
Johnson tried to quiet the back and forth snipers of the aisle.
“The house will be organized!” Johnson croaked as din rose in the room.
Both Rep. Anna Paulina LunaR-Fla. and D-Conn. Rep. Jahana Hayes continued to shout.
“The house will be in order!” The thunderous angry Johnson.
The Speaker slammed the mallet and stared at the dagger towards the democratic side of the room.

You will see the pattern.
It always seems the same on Capitol Hill. The pattern never seems to change. Yes, in the dog days of Washington August, you probably have 70s days. But the temperature eventually returned to above the 90s. That is the political norm on Capitol Hill.
The question is: “Will it change?”
It’s hard to see things “change”. If they were to “change”, that could happen after 9/11, Gifford attack, baseball practice shooting or January 6. Any of these disasters can be the driving force for “changing” things on Capitol Hill.
Some people will think. But the political climate has not changed anything.
Part of the reason is that there is too much membership flow Capitol Hill. Even since January 6, Congress has witnessed a staggering turnover. Now, twenty-seven house members are preparing to retire at the end of the semester. At this stage of the cycle, the usual number is 16. So, after Kirk’s shooting, those who have these calm demands here may not be here at the next disaster. Many people who might help calm down are no longer here after Giffords or 9/11. This will enhance the fluctuation.
There is now a high level of distrust among lawmakers. The toxicity of social media is of no help.

There are no regulatory agencies on Capitol Hill. But lawmakers can use it alone as their own thermostat. If they set their own internal temperature, the mercury may drop. They can create their own Congressional Cold Front.
But how long is the question?
You already know the answer.
