Opening statements at Harford County Circuit Court began Friday morning Bell Air, Maryland In the trial of Victor Antonio Martinez-Hernandez, 23, from El Salvador, who was charged with murdering Morin, 37, in 2023.
Morin’s family, including her mother, Patty Morin, arrived in court on Friday.
Martinez-Hernandez is accused of raping and killing five-year-old Harford County mother Morin, whose body was found on a popular walking trail in August 2023.

Moline was reportedly missing after some evening practices on the MA&PA Trail in Bel Air on August 5.
Harford County State Attorney Alison Healey said in an opening statement Friday that community members walked along the walkway after seeing posters of missing persons on Facebook.

Healy said Morin’s right shoes and socks were left, and her left shoes and socks were discarded. She pointed out that Maureen’s bra was pulled to her breasts.

Healy said the defendant Martinez-Hernandez forced Morin to hit her in the tunnel wall and raped her. She said there was evidence that the brutal attack occurred between 7:04 and 7:10 pm.
Authorities found her cell phone was immersed in water and completely collapsed with the destroyed Apple watch. Nearby, they also found her Apple Airpods.

They said Martinez-Hernandez repeatedly told authorities that he had never been to Maryland, only in Texas and Oklahoma.
“Healy said Friday that you will be sure that all of this is the defendant’s DNA.
You will be sure that he left her there, fulfilling his mother’s worst nightmare.

Sawyer Hicks, a defense attorney representing Martinez-Hernandez, used his opening remarks to express doubts about the DNA game and suggested the incident was a crime of passion.
Hicks reiterated that the state had a burden of proof and pointed out that his client was considered innocent until it was proved that he killed Morin.

“When you retire to make a deliberate attitude, we are confident that in this case you will see reasonable suspicion and Hernandez is not guilty,” Hicks said.

Martinez-Hernandez and Morin are strangers who seem to be putting the foundations for her then-boyfriend, Richard Tobin, he said.
Hicks raised a sharp question to challenge the jury: “Where is the motivation? Where is Richard Tobin’s DNA?”
Tobin was never charged with any misconduct in this case.

Morin reportedly disappeared by her boyfriend in August 2023, who said she never returned after going out to run on the MA&PA trail, a pedestrian trail in Bell air, a quiet town that is usually about 28 miles northeast of Baltimore on August 5, 2023.
