Sacramento – Gov. Gavin Newsom used his written status address on Tuesday to use California as a bastion against his allegations of demolishing public services, violating the rule of law and using blackmail bullying businesses and universities to threaten the Trump administration.
These remarks were as Newsom’s national popularity grew and gave him a wider political stage, even if he skipped the literal meaning, he chose to send his speech in writing rather than conveying it to the parliamentarians from the usual general conference scenes. His speech portrayed a portrait of a country that the federal government sieges, even with the consequences of a devastating Los Angeles County fire, housing costs and an uneven economic recovery.
When he framed Trump and his allies as the main obstacle to progress, he relied on the familiar California resilience theme, pointing to disaster responses, investments in schools and clean energy, and the state’s economic endurance. He said California celebrated its 175th anniversary, “the country is in a strong state, fully committed to defending democracy and determined not to bend.”
“It is a mistake to think that California is going to wince in a violent attack,” Newsom said in a 2,300-word address.
The written address marks the fifth consecutive year that Newsom’s tradition of delivering annual addresses to state legislators in person, a decades-old governor.
His unconventional approach has attracted some criticism, especially the example of a news agency that Republicans have previously described as a lack of respect for institutions. The California Constitution only requires that the state of the state be submitted to the Legislature as a written letter, which was the way the Governor general was until the 1960s to roughly perform his duties. Newsom said Trump’s approach was the same from the fires to immigration: abandon California in a crisis and attack its liberal values. Newsom said California has led the road to building a green economy, noting that the state sold more than 2 million vehicles and now has 51 miles of Caltrain Railroad Tracks electrified. He added that the state’s grids operated for a full 60 days using 100% clean electricity.
“Our climate investment will create millions of new jobs and reduce air pollution by more than 70%,” Newsom wrote. “In California, economic growth and environmental protection go hand in hand.”
Like the governors of the past, he used his speech to emphasize California’s outstanding role in the national economy. He said the GDP is as high as $4.1 trillion, and the state leads startups, venture capital and space technology.
The governor closed with a rebellious opinion, promising to report next year in his final state, with California “brighter and more prosperous than ever.”
