Newly cast Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney defiantly rejected any notion that Canada will become the 51st state in the United States due to tensions in a full-scale trade war between neighbors.
Carney spoke to reporters after being sworn in on Friday, shooting down bold and controversial ideas President Donald Trumpcalling this idea “crazy”.
“We will never be part of America in any way,” Carney said.
He said that Canada is sovereign with its own values and traditions and that Trump needs to show more respect to the country.

When asked about Secretary of State Marco Rubio, he told reporters that Trump’s position is that Canada is best to join the United States, and Carney said Rubio’s views were crazy.
“It’s crazy,” Carney said. “His point of view is crazy. That’s it.”
Trump said the annexation of Canada would prevent the country from receiving penalties for trade tariffs. Trump claims that the United States subsidizes Canada every year, and the United States begins to impose 25% tariff on goods Last week came from Canada and Mexico.

“We respect President Trump,” Carney said. “President Trump puts some very important issues at the top of his agenda. Understanding his agenda is to understand the importance of addressing the scourge of fentanyl, which is a challenge in Canada and the United States.
“And I’m going to say that the measures taken in Canada and Mexico (and the United States) in recent weeks mean we are making huge progress.”
Carney noted that he understands the importance of President Trump to American workers and American work.
“We want him and his government to understand the importance we have to Canadian workers and Canadian work,” Carney said.
“We will seek ways to work together so that the great economy achieves both goals, as we are doing.

Carney is a former Goldman Sachs executive who worked in London, Tokyo, New York and Toronto for 13 years before being appointed as deputy governor of the Bank of Canada in 2003. Carney from 2008 to 2013, from 2013 to 2013 to 2020.
He has never been elected to office by Canadian voters, nor has he seated in parliament. Trudeau won the liberal leadership last week with 86% of the vote.
