In 1997, David Halberstam published his 1972 bestseller, The Best and the The Best and the The Best and the The Best and the The Bettles The Best and the Bettles The Best and The Best and The The Best and The The Best and The Bettert of The Weard introduced), and did not reject what he thought was the real best highlight: himself.
This book did a great job in Richard Nixon’s year landslide25 years ago before the new preface appeared. Halberstam tells us painfully. The original hardback book sold 60,000 copies in the first two weeks, with a total of 180,000 and 1.5 million paperbacks.
That is indeed a “big book”. This is also a big book with more than 800 pages. It has a greater impact. The self-respect of the author and his work is so clear that it is sufficient in every paragraph of the introduction. Just listening to these 40 minutes of time, it’s worth $25, but the whole thing is turning around, it’s a time capsule. I don’t read much of this book now. It should be, not because of Doge’s ambitions-it does look like the “best, smartest” in the tech world.
This old book should be read now because “the best and the smartest” tells us a lot about the origins of the collapse Traditional media We see it around. It starts with…arrogance and on the agenda not telling the truth, but telling a story, telling a side of a debate for a side of a story, in which case, Kennedy’s side, the “enlightened” side.
In fact, Halberstam’s project apologized for Jack Kennedy, a hard explanation of how the institution disappointed him, how the Bay of Pigs was not his fault, why he was smashed by Khrushchev in June 1961 in Vienna, and how the entire Vietnam disaster combined LBJ and Nixon’s fault.
Holberstein tells us that Kennedy is leaving Vietnam and the second semester will be different etc. Traditional media is passed on to tasks that protect the left and attack the right. It starts with “the best and the smartest”.
Halberstam’s great success, and his real understanding of what’s going on, scattered in Manhattan – The claim among Belway media elites, became everyone’s holy grail reporter. Watergate is actually the second act in the coronation of the environmental media. Halberstein’s book is the first.
I haven’t read “the best and the smartest” (even if I’ve done it) for over 40 years. I downloaded the audio version on Friday, which is the Halberstam Title Comparison of the title of Halberstam by Review Magazine Editor John Podhortez (in the magazine’s excellent daily podcast) with Elon Musk and the seven “men” who sat down with Bret Baier last week. (I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tommy Lee Jones strode and sit on the chair.
Podhoretz’s point is that we’ve tried “very smart people” before, but it didn’t solve it. He mentioned “best and smartest” and it touched distant memories. Are the smart guys who come in with President John F. Kennedy really smart? Or are they just…connected? The right lineage, the right school, the right mentor’s product?
It turns out that this is what Halberstam thinks and writes about the subject, but especially the reread of the 1992 edition reveals more. This is the origin story Traditional media Rise. In the introduction of the 1992 edition, Halberstam reveals the origins of his book in an article by Harper, one of the serious magazines of the day’s serious journalists. Midge Dector, noted by Halberstam, has been a neoconservative, and he suggested a post on McGeorge Bundy. Halberstein ran away. Run, run, run.
“A light is on right away,” he told us. “It’s an opportunity, perhaps the most glowing person of the Kennedy people, all of whom seemed to be dazzling when they first took office.” Halberstam also had the opportunity to investigate the entire administration, especially its Vietnam collapse.
He told us: “This article caused a storm, “the general power of printing and magazines like Harper are stronger in their relationship with television than they are today. ”
“This is considered an important article. It shows that anyone in any major centrist magazine, let alone a centrist, is probably so critical of members of the Kennedy administration. More importantly, this is the first time writer at the Liberal Center, it is the Kennedy administration’s decision, it is the Kennedy administration’s decision, and it is significant on vieted.
Halberstam went to Vietnam in 1967 for three months – he was a journalist there four years ago – and this 90-day trip “shocked and disillusioned”. He repeatedly called himself “depressed.” He said he found self-deception in Vietnam’s “optimism”.
“‘What the U.S. Army lost in Vietnam,’ my close friend and colleague Charlie Moore told me a few years later,” Halbestram told readers one of the thousand assistants, “In the best summaries of the time, ‘is its intellectual integrity.”
Until that time, Halberstam admitted that “the gentleman reached a consensus agreement among good journalists in Washington, and that the Kennedy administration was one of the excellence, that was out of good things and violations of bad things, and when it did bad things, it was only in self-defense, only in self-defense, that other good things could be done.”
Halberstam broke the deal, and most of Georgetown institutions were angry, but Halberstram got the book deal. So for more than a decade, “all the soldiers of the president” appeared, a founding myth of journalists who appeared in Sir Galahad.
“Our career is a career built on the immediacy of rewards,” Halberstam acknowledged in a discussion about the regular sidelines of the hard-to-give up the author’s life. Journalism is not a profession at all, but a craft that anyone can do – but the subtle climbing of the news ladder that works here is at work, and he has since launched a thousand ships.

The received wisdom was also collected in one place, which still dominates Traditional mediausually held tightly by acquaintances of actual post-war history in the United States. Cold War, McCarthyism, the 1960 movement…Camilotte: Everything is here. Halberstam believes that the “difference between intelligence and wisdom” he understands is a fact.
One sentence stands out: “Good journalists of that era, those well-educated, inspired, work for enlightened organizations like Kennedy and the same thing as Kennedy.”
There are other “tellings” in this book. “There is no irony here,” he wrote, and the conclusion about “Atlantic arrogance” and Halberstam was that Kennedy “will not send combat troops into Vietnam.”

Look, journalists are mysterious, telling us that if the “good journalist” in the “Enlightened Publications” had just helped Kennedy International Airport to better guide the ship if the president had not been murdered and succeeded by Oafish LBJ and the sinister Nixon.
“The fact is that history – in Nobang, India, we are on the wrong side – is a difficult task.”

Halberstam was actually written in the 1992 preface. We adjusted “most of our journalism so that it seemed like a communist war against anti-communists, but rather, the Vietnamese people might see it as a colonial war against indigenous nationalist forces.”
Halberstam believes Theodore White invented the form he followed in the production of the 1960 president, and White did establish a genre. But Halberstam does more than that. He created a prototype: a journalist as a demigod and a truth lecturer. This is a myth, a myth designed to believe. Now it’s a joke.
