In 1990, women over the age of 40 accounted for 1.2% of births. In 2023, that percentage increased to 4.1%.

The CDC commented in its report: “The birth rate declines in women under 30 years of age are greater than the increase in rates in women aged 30 and older, resulting in a decline in overall fertility.”

Dr. Ashley Wiltshire of the Columbia University Fertility Center in New York commented on the fertility shift in an interview with Fox News Digital.

“This shift is likely due to an advancement in contraception methods and assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs),” she said.
“The purpose of these two entities is to improve the overall reproductive autonomy of all women – from those who do not want to conceive those who do so.”
