Mira Murati, a new AI joint venture, Thinking Machine Laboratoryhas received two new prominent consultants: Bob McGrew, Bob McGrew, who was formerly the chief research officer of OpenAI, and Alec Radford is the OpenAI researcher behind many of the company’s more transformative innovations.

Radford left Openai late last year to conduct independent research at the company for nearly a decade and is the lead author of Openai’s pioneering research paper on generating pre-trained Transformers (GPTS). GPTS supports OpenAI’s most popular products, including the company’s AI-powered chatbot platform Chatgpt. Radford also produced a variety of models in the company’s GPT series, as well as the speech recognition models Whisper and Dall-E for the image generation model of OpenAI.
Thinking Machines Lab has been vague about its research agenda and product roadmap so far. But in a February announcement, the startup said it intends to build tools to “make AI work for [people’s] Unique needs and goals and create AI systems that are “wider understanding, customizable and more extensive” with currently available systems.
