City school officials announced Friday that minors who want to see a high school football game in the area now need an adult partner.
The new district of Columbia Inter-School Athletic Association takes effect Friday and will last until October 10, a notice issued by the District of Columbia Public Schools. The regulation comes from “multiple instances of audience conflict” in the game.
Attendance rates are limited to adults or minors accompanied by adults, and each adult can bring up to three minors. People cannot enter the facilities that host football games after the third quarter ends. The departed audience cannot re-enter.
Percy Brooks’ son, who played in an Archbishop Carroll football game last week, stabbed him in WJLA-TV, “It’s not usually the kids going to school. There are always kids outside causing all the uproar.”
The notice does not specify whether students aged 18 and older are eligible to be an adult partner for others.
DCPS said in the notice that the franchise sales will end in the third quarter. The hometown fan section will be separated, and in the stands, the presence of school staff will increase “work and interact with students.”
“In some of our high school football games, we will ask students to be accompanied by adults so that there are more school officials during the game, and we require all children and families to follow their instructions to arrive at the school when they arrive,” Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a press conference Friday.
The affected schools are working to reschedule games to start between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. rather than between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., DCPS said, and some schools may reschedule games on Friday to Thursday or Saturday.
