Michigan city may ban LGBTQ+ flags on public property, judge rules

U.S. District Judge David Lawson dismissed the lawsuit against Hamtramke on Monday. City Council Voting Only five flags are allowed, including the United States, the Michigan flag and the flag “representing the international characteristics of the community.”

Opponents of the policy say Hamtramck, known for welcome immigration, violated the violation freedom of speech By banning the flag of pride, Lawson said the policy is constitutional because it prohibits all private flags, not just some.

A proud flag was shown in 2021 and 2022, and then some members of the All-Muslim Council argued that it challenged the beliefs of some members. The Council voted in June 2023 for the policy.

The following month, two members of the city’s interpersonal relationship committee were removed from their posts with a pride flag flying on city property.

Council member Khalil Refai said in a statement at the time: “The Council believes in fairness, neutrality and rule of law for our residents, and other things about the community. We recently passed a resolution to do this, and our two oath commissioners opposed it completely and did what they wanted.”

Hamtramck’s businesses and residents may still hang Pride Flags on their private property.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 40% of the city’s 27,000 residents were born in other countries. A large proportion of these foreign-born residents are the decline in Yemen or Bangladesh.
