Council member Khalil Refai said in a statement at the time: “The Council believes in fairness, neutrality and rule of law for our residents, and other things about the community. We recently passed a resolution to do this, and our two oath commissioners opposed it completely and did what they wanted.”

Hamtramck’s businesses and residents may still hang Pride Flags on their private property.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 40% of the city’s 27,000 residents were born in other countries. A large proportion of these foreign-born residents are the decline in Yemen or Bangladesh.
