New York City Its 264th St. Patrick’s Day parade will be held today, marking the oldest and longest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the world. The first march was held in 1762, predating the United States’ Declaration of Independence.
Major U.S. cities hosted their own St. Patrick’s Day parades this weekend, including Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Chicago. Chicago even dyes the Chicago River green every year to commemorate the celebration.

Although the first wave of Irish immigrants arrived in the United States in the 1700s, immigration reports show that the huge famine of the 1800s almost doubled the Irish population – more than one million Irish people died of hunger, while another million immigrants immigrated to the United States.
Trump is a native of New Yorkers, proud of the St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York City, watching “hundreds of citizens with green Ireland” parade on Fifth Street and passing “the most beautiful cathedral in the world,” St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Martin showed Trump a crystal bowl filled with clovers, a tradition that dates back to 1952 and symbolizes a long-term friendship between Ireland and the United States. Martin said the Clover Bowl ceremony was a “important moment to reflect on the relationship between our two countries.”

After winning a majority in the general election in 1918, Sinn Féin declared Ireland independence and established the first Dáil or the Irish Parliament. But Britain refused to recognize Irish independence and led the IRA to launch the Irish War of Independence in 1919.
The Anglo-Ireland Treaty in 1921 ended the war and created the free Irish state, the state became the Republic of Ireland in 1949 and allowed six counties of Northern Ireland to remain in the UK. Catholics in Northern Ireland face discrimination from a coalition government that prefers Protestants. Inspired by the civil rights movement, Catholics began peaceful protests demanding equal rights in Northern Ireland in the 1960s.
The conflict between the coalition government and nationalist protesters escalated into “trouble” – 30 years of violence between British soldiers and the IRA. The United States played an important role in ending “trouble” in 1998.

Former President Bill Clinton Assisted in negotiating the Good Friday Agreement in 1998, which largely ended violence in Ireland and strengthened relations between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland by establishing a power-sharing agreement between trade unionists and nationalists.
Former President Ronald Reagan, the first U.S. president to visit Ireland, has launched the U.S. role in the peace process, Martin said Wednesday. The Reagan administration helped establish the 1985 Anglo-Ireland Agreement, which laid the foundation for the Good Friday Agreement.

Martin praised Trump for conducting peaceful negotiations in Ukraine and the Middle East during his visit to Washington, after Trump Ukrainian President Vodimir Zelensky Last month at the Oval Office.
Martin added: “We are ready to play our role in supporting work, ending conflicts and ensuring peace in Ukraine, the Middle East or anywhere. We very much welcome the unremitting efforts and efforts of President Trump and his administration to bring this mission from the first days of his tenure.”
However, some Irish officials disagree with Martin’s sentiment and held an event at the White House last week. Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald and Northern Ireland’s first minister Michelle O’Neill skipped the U.S. St. Patrick’s Day celebration this year in protest against Trump’s call for Palestinians who have moved away from Gaza.

Trump said at a joint press conference with Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu The United States will “take over the Gaza Strip.” Trump also suggested relocation of Palestinians to rebuild Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East.”
When the reporter asked Trump about boycott at an Oval Office press conference on Wednesday, Trump said: “I really haven’t heard of it.” However, Trump seemed to have returned to his Gaza comments, telling reporters: “No one expels any Palestinians.”

Ireland is a long-time supporter of Palestinian independence, as many Irelands are similar to the British occupation of Ireland. Ireland advocates for the establishment of a comprehensive Palestinian state and bilateral solution during the Gaza War. Irish citizens oppose the war in Gaza and have been protesting since the beginning of the war in support of the Palestinians.
