I’m taking office Minister of Education Different from any of my predecessors: Overseeing the department I am now leading responsible and permanently shut down. This is not a routine task. It was a transformation, from the clear will of the American people to return to the states and President Donald Trump’s decisive elections.

This is not my first experience leading a federal agency. During Trump’s first term I was at the helm of the Small Business Administration, which was founded in the 1950s to support entrepreneurial startups and private companies.

Whether on my watch or over the years, SBA has brought measurable success to job seekers and workers. The number of small businesses has doubled since 1980, creating two-thirds of all new jobs in the past 25 years. That’s why the SBA enjoys bipartisan support in Congress and a wide range of mass missions.

Since the Ministry of Education opened in 1980, it has overseen an era of stagnation and decline in student achievements. Although it exceeds One trillion dollars in federal spending, Exam scores remain flat, with millions of students still in failed government-run schools.

Rather than providing real solutions, the department often prioritizes federal micromanagement rather than supporting meaningful learning. It permanently requires budget increases beyond Congress-allocated budgets – all without proof of ROI in the form of improved student learning outcomes.

However, for all federal spending, few teachers, students or parents can point out how the work of the department benefits them. Employees in many departments did not even show up to the office, some hundreds of miles away from their duties before Trump directed federal employees to return to the office. In 50 states, federal supervision is unpopular. One in four teachers regard workplace rules as their primary reason for leaving their profession.

Trump responded with a decisive solution. Follow the title of the executive order “Improving educational outcomes By empowering parents, state and community, “He directed me to remove this ineffective bureaucracy and restore control of education to state and parents.

Our mission is dual: (1) to coordinate with Congress to eliminate or relocate the functions and functions of the Department of Education, and (2) to ensure that no taxpayer money flows to DEI programs or institutions that adopt DEI.

The repeal of the department will not happen tomorrow. But we can move in this direction immediately by revising guidance documents and granting competition to promote the president’s vision of returning educational power to state and local education leaders.

As we begin to comply with this executive order, we can also remove the DEI agenda and redirected civil rights enforcement of the last government so that we can protect all students from harassment and discrimination, including Jewish students studying on elite campuses and female athletes in the field and locker rooms.

The foundation of this new vision is a strong belief in our work and our leadership role. K-12 education is the responsibility of parents, and first and foremost an investment in their children’s future.

However, for all federal spending, few teachers, students or parents can point out how the work of the department benefits them.

Parents should be able to decide what their children go to school, ensure that the curriculum is off the political agenda, and choose a school that protects the safety and well-being of their children. Students should be able to expect an education in the basics of excellence – teaching mathematics, reading and citizenship, rooted in honest teaching of American history. When they graduate from high school, they should be ready to enter a college or workforce education program in order to provide them with a high-paying job and achieve a career.

As we execute President Trump’s directives, we will systematically relax unnecessary regulations and prepare to redistribute other functions of the department to states or other institutions, including state funding programs to support low-income students and learners with special needs, allocate student financial aid, civil rights enforcement, and data collection. We will end this system that is too numerous and underdelivered and empower local education leaders to build something better on it.

Federal agencies of this size have never been eliminated before. But it is a necessary correction that will ultimately lift our schools out of Washington’s grip and restore freedom and innovation in education. My responsibility as secretary is to lead this effort transparently by respecting the will of the American people and returning education to the United States.
