Bob Davis, long-term voice Kansas Jayhawks Basketball and football have passed away, his family confirmed on Friday through KU’s sports department. He is 80 years old.
Davis died just a week after his wife Linda passed away more than fifty years ago. The cause of death was not released immediately. Kansas Basketball Head coach Bill Self remembers Davis as a “selfless person.”
“Not only did Bob outstandingly with his craft, he was also an amazing, modest and selfless person who gave it to many,” Self said. “Our hearts go all out to the entire family, especially his amazing wife Linda passed away last week.”

Self’s seventh seed Jayhawks in Arkansas this week NCAA Championship. Davis’s publicity broadcast tenure in Kansas began in 1984 and continued until his retirement in 2016.

In 1988, there was a 1988 national champion “Danny and the Miracle” star Danny Manning led by Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown. Twenty years later, the self-led national champion team is known for “Mirio’s Miracle.” Mario Chalmers’ three-pointer tied to overtime against Memphis in the final.

Davis made eight trips at Jayhawks, competing in the last four games of football, six games and thousands of regular season football and basketball games. Many spent with Max Falkenstien, his ex, and later his colleagues and close friends, who spent 60 years broadcasting Jayhawks before retirement. Falkenstien died in 2019.
Former Kansas and North Carolina Coach Roy Williams describes Davis as the “giant” of the University of Kansas.

“Bob Davis is a great announcer and loves KU,” Williams said. “I’m a new coach and he’s been a huge help for me. He sets the standard for everyone who worked with me later. He’s the KU giant.”

Davis also called the Women’s Final Four for six times CBS, which he spent 16 years calling Kansas City Royals Games on radio and television. He was named the Kansas sports actor 14 times this year.
Davis’s son Steven, daughter Katie and four grandchildren survived.
