Four protesters sued Judge Beverly on the “buffer zone” Judge Canon, who said illegally took them too far from the court. Karen Read’s Retrial Massachusetts is in murder and other charges.
“The shells issued this order, mainly to cancel her criticism because … in this case, the only recorded protest was the plaintiffs, who quietly held a sign of criticizing the shells,” the lawsuit said.
The plaintiffs are Massachusetts resident Jason Grant, Allyson Taggart, Lisa Peterson and Samantha Lyons. Their lawsuit also points to state police chief Geoffrey Noble and Dedham police chief Michael D’Entrimont.
In their lawsuit, they asked the federal court to declare a “buffer” an unconstitutional “previous restrictions” of freedom of speech and injunctions and attorney fees.

The court established a 200-foot buffer around the court building itself and a parking lot at the nearby Norfolk County Register before the first trial at Read last year.
The lawsuit was so questioned as the area expanded that it stretched to 200 feet around Bates Court, Bullard Street, Ames Street and Court Street for a second trial.

“The buffer banning all First Amendment activities is almost always unconstitutional, and that’s no different,” said Mark Trammell, the plaintiff’s lawyer and executive director of the American Liberty Center. “Karen’s reading of the trial continues to inspire passionate public debate and citizens must be allowed to protest peacefully outside their own courts.”

Philadelphia-area defense attorney David Gelman has been hearing the case.
“The judge is not saying they can’t protest – the judge says they can’t protest in court,” he said. “The reason is also legal. It can be entered by a jury every day and leave the building.”

He added that similar orders have been maintained across the country.
“The judge is 100% within her right to do this,” he said. “This is the most common pain among protesters. All speeches are not freedom of speech.”

Protesters should regularly attend many of her court dates since they were accused of murdering Boston police boyfriend John O’Keefe in 2022.

The 45-year-old reads First trial O’Keefe’s death ended last year with an open jury.
The jury’s jury began Tuesday. It is expected to take six to eight weeks after the public statement.

Read accused Second-degree murdermanslaughter, left the scene of the fatal accident. If convicted of the highest charge, she could face life in jail.
Reid denied the charges, pleaded not guilty, and claimed he was part of the police cover-up.

The shells warned potential jurors not to be affected by protesters outside at the start of Tuesday’s jury selection.
