When the Dawson Creek star admitted that his journey of colorectal cancer had a profound impact on his marriage and family, Van der Beek leaned towards his beliefs during turbulent times.

In a social media video released on March 8, titled “What Cancer Teaches Me,” the Hollywood actor began sharing what he took from “The 48th trip around the sun.”

“Today is my birthday, that’s The most difficult year My life,” Van Der Beek began.

“When I was young, I used to define myself as an actor, it was never that fulfilling, and then I became a husband… much better, and then I became a father… that was the ultimate.”

The six-year-old father noted that he was forced to “look at my own mortality rate” during his cancer battle.

“I had to die from death,” he said. “And all the definitions I care so much about are taken away by me.”

“I’m going to get treatment, so I can’t be a husband who will help my wife again,” Van der Beek continued. “I can’t be a father who can pick up the kids, put the kids in bed and be there for them. I can’t be a supplier because I don’t have a job.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, “many therapies can help control” colorectal cancer, including “surgery, radiation therapy and medications such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy.”

In November 2024, Van der Beek revealed his diagnosis for the first time in a statement to people: “I have colorectal cancer. I have been dealing with this diagnosis privately and have been taking steps to address it with the support of my incredible family.”

He added: “I feel good if there are some reasons to be optimistic.”
