Mahmoud Khalil, a former Columbia graduate student, will take over Trump administration On Friday, in a New Jersey court, the president’s team worked to expel anti-Israel activists.

“We will revoke visas and/or green cards from Hamas supporters in the United States in order to deport them.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote in a post on X earlier this month.

“In this case, the statements that are distorted in this case are not protected speech,” the document said. “Therefore, Khalil’s First Amendment charge is the red herring.”

Marc van der Hout, one of Khalil’s lawyers, and Noor Abdalla, Khalil’s wife, made statements in a series of Instagram posts. They describe Khalil as a “political prisoner detained in one The ice rink in Louisiana. ”
Khalil’s lawyer believes his support for Palestinians is protected by freedom of speech and the government’s deportation efforts are to prevent his “current and future speech” and to prevent others from doing so.
“The policy, including provisions on Mr. Khalil, does not issue appropriate notices to anyone living in the country whose original law remarks, views, beliefs or advocacy will lead to the government’s targeting detention and dismissal, and provides government officials with discretion to undetained speech in violation of the law to deny speech.”
His lawyer also pointed out that the government did not define who to be a “Hamas supporter.” They said the activities of Khalil, who is “aligned with Hamas”, are not clear.

Khalil wrote on March 18: “In the coming weeks, students, advocates and elected officials must unite to defend their right to protest Palestine. Not only our voice, but the basic civil liberties for all. Fully understand this moment, I hope I personally have the freedom to witness my first mature child.”
Khalil, Syrian Citizens of Algeria entered the United States with a student visa in 2022 and later applied for a permanent resident in 2024.
He was the first target of the Trump administration’s crusaders to revoke their student visas to participate in the protests.
