On Wednesday, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed an executive order that activates members of the New York National Guard to help “ensure the safety and security of correctional facilities, while correctional staff continue to do illegally and illegal work stops.”

“These destructive and unauthorized work shutdowns for these correction officials must be over because they endanger the safety of colleagues, the prison population and create inappropriate fears for residents in the surrounding communities,” Governor Hawkell said.

“To address this illegal shutdown, I directed the appointment of highly respected independent mediator Martin Schönmann for the thousands of correction officers and staff who are continuing to report on duty – I thank them for continuing to serve them and do the right thing thing.”
