The media learned that after talking to multiple sources, up to 500 prisoners were placed in 10 dormitories in Riverview. It is also confirmed that about 15-20 employees are spending the night.
According to media reports, it is not clear what caused the escalating tension between prisoners and correctional staff, but prison staff considered the conditions unsafe and removed staff back to the visitor area.
Correction officials said they could hear it sounded like prisoners destroyed the glass and damaged the dormitory, so staff left the visitor area and entered the jail’s administrative area and felt safe.
Staff then called for help, with at least 2 teams arriving from Gouverneur and Albany.

According to media, during the ordeal, no correction facilities personnel were injured.

On Wednesday, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed an executive order that activates members of the New York National Guard to help “ensure the safety and security of correctional facilities, while correctional staff continue to do illegally and illegal work stops.”
The order also provides additional overtime compensation for calibration officials and other employees who are reporting responsibilities and actively working to ensure the facility.

New York State also filed an injunction under Taylor law, and a judge approved a temporary restraining order requiring strike corrections officers to stop illegal activities on Wednesday.
“These destructive and unauthorized work shutdowns for these correction officials must be over because they endanger the safety of colleagues, the prison population and create inappropriate fears for residents in the surrounding communities,” Governor Hawkell said.
“To address this illegal shutdown, I directed the appointment of highly respected independent mediator Martin Schönmann for the thousands of correction officers and staff who are continuing to report on duty – I thank them for continuing to serve them and do the right thing thing.”
