According to a new study from a model, eating too many delicate wheat and rice products, and eating too little whole grains is fueling new cases of type 2 diabetes worldwide. Data to 2018.
“Our research shows that poor carbohydrate quality is a major driver of diet type 2 diabetes worldwide,” said Dariush Mozaffarian, PhD, professor of nutrition at Tufts University and professor of medicine at the School of Medicine at Tufts Medical School in Boston.
Another key factor, the study said: People are eating too much red and processed meat, such as bacon, sausage, salami, etc. According to the study, these three factors – whole grains and too much processed cereals and meat – were the main drivers of more than 14 million cases of type 2 diabetes in 2018.
In fact, the study estimated that 7 of the 10 cases of type 2 diabetes worldwide in 2018 were associated with poor food choice.

“These new findings reveal key areas of national and global concern to improve nutrition and reduce the devastating burden of diabetes,” said Mozaffarian, who is also editor-in-chief. Tufts Health and Nutrition Letter.
Mozaffarian and his team developed a research model for dietary intake between 1990 and 2018 and applied it to 184 countries. The study found that compared with 1990, there were 8.6 million cases of type 2 diabetes in 2018 due to poor diet.
Eating too much unhealthy food is more of a driving force for type 2 diabetes worldwide than a lack of eating Healthy foods, especially among men and women, are among urban and rural residents compared to older people.
More than 60% of global dietary and dietary disease cases are caused simply by over-intake of six harmful eating habits: eating too much delicate rice, wheat and potatoes; too much processed and untreated red meat; and drinking too much powdered sugar drinks and juices.
Inadequate intake of five protective dietary factors – fruits, non-starch vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains and yogurt – caused more than 39% of new cases.
People in Poland and Russia tend to focus their diet on potatoes, red and processed meats, as well as other countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and other countries in Central Asia, with the highest percentage of new type 2 diabetes cases associated with the diet.
There are also a large number of new cases in Colombia, Mexico and other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, which the researchers say may be due to the dependence on sugary drinks and processed meat and low intakes of whole grains.
“Our modeling approach does not prove causality and our findings should be considered an estimate of risk,” the authors wrote.
