How Supergiant games made Hades II for the Nintendo Switch 2 | Greg Kasavin interview


Nintendo launched the Switch 2 hybrid console in New York yesterday and brought many game developers who made games for the platform. One of the games on display is Hades II of Supergiant Games, which has been in progress for four years.

I spoke to Greg Kasavin, creative director of Supergiant Games at the event and talked about how the company played for the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2. Hades for the 2020 Supergiant Switch for The Switch ship for the 2020 Hades. The company obtained a window title on Windows in May 2024, visited Windows in May 2024, and early in October 2024, which sold the same price as the photographer.

Now, it has the titles for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. I played the game and the gameplay was very smooth and had a pretty fast 2.5D action.

Hades II features Melinoe as the sister of Zagreus, the hero of the original game. She clashes with Titan Chronos (her grandfather). She tangled with the Olympian gods in the first game – Zeus, Poseidon, Aremis and Aphrodite. She also has to deal with new gods in the game, such as God’s Blacksmith Hephaestus, Sun Goddess Apollo, Moon Goddess Selena and Hect. Melinoe has the ability to tame animals and tame the power of the moon.

Casavon said Supergiant was pleased with the 2020 Switch version because the game attracted a large and enthusiastic audience.

For the sequel, the company wants it to work well on the original switch. Casavin said that when they started, they knew nothing about Switch 2.

“When we learned about the Switch 2, we were able to launch games on the platform very quickly because we had laid the foundation,” Casavin said. “It’s great for us to have a bigger and brighter screen.”

The developer team utilizes other hardware headroom to increase the effect while supporting the original platform. The team explored the Switch 2’s new Joy-Con gaming controller because it’s a mouse. But the team decided to bypass the mouse capability.

“We want people to pick up and play the game with the most basic understanding of how the controller works,” Casavon said.

The game runs at 720p on the original switch, but in terms of running Hades II, it can perform 1080p resolution on new hardware. It’s not difficult, as the team is making games to support various resolutions on modern PCs. The goal is to get the game running at 60 frames per second on switch and switch 2. The 120fps feature surprised Casaven, so the team hasn’t figured out if it can meet that spec. That’s the essence of hardware design – it’s a mobile goal.

As for four years, it’s the same time it takes to make the original hades. Casavin said the new game could take longer.

“It’s just a bigger game,” he said. “For us, finding a speed of development, over time it’s a marathon, not a sprint, the type of mindset is very important. Our team has been together for over 15 years and our goal has been to stay together as long as possible and stay as long as possible. This means we can do our best and we need to master our game as much as possible so that they can achieve the best efforts. Longer development time is just a function of it.”

Hades II has no release date yet. There is at least one early access mode to hit. But Casavin said the game will be sold at a low price because the company believes in providing good value to players.

“Hardes’ original game is just as important to the sequel due to the early entry development, and that’s also very important to the sequel,” Casavin said. “We’re really grateful for everyone’s excitement about the original game, and the early entry of the game. It helps us keep moving forward.”
