The activation process is fast – you turn it on, charge it and download the HMD OffGrid app on your phone. Once connected, the app will take you through the settings. I charged it for about an hour to get it to 100%, and the battery lasted from Monday to Thursday, reaching about 35%. However, none of our outdoor tours were more than four hours, so Offgrid might not have enough battery life to enable weekend backpacking. (And, neither of your phone.)
OffGrid has some different features, as well as the above SOS services and real-time tracking. You can text via satellite messages and check in on the HMD OffGrid app. In Washington’s cascade, it took about eight minutes to connect to the satellites under the tree cover, but it was much faster from the shore of the lake under clear skies.

It is IP68 level and has been tested on military specifications, which means you can treat it with reasonable abuse. I did kick it in and put it in an alpine lake and then keep working.
The device uses the same frequency as the L-band frequencies used by all GPS systems to triangulate your position as it crawls along the surface of the earth. But while Garmin uses the iris satellite network for telecommunications, HMD works with Skylo and Viasat, which really makes me a little nervous. Most of the satellite messengers I’ve tested use iris, and Skylo and Viasat seem to be less reliable. However, I followed my father’s words and the position with my husband to walk back and forth reasonably in a timely manner.

Offgrid is far from your only option. Motorola’s protests are cheap, but it’s not as cold-resistant and doesn’t have Overwatch X rescue.
