Democratic-led resolution cancels president Donald Trump’s Tariffs on Canada exceeded the Senate on Wednesday after several Republicans joined peers in support of that.
Susan Collins, Republican of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul of Kentucky supported the resolution to get the president to do so. The last vote was 51 to 48.
“As I have been warning, tariffs are bad policies, and the trade war with our partners is the biggest. The biggest hurts workers. Tariffs increase the cost of goods and services,” McConnell, a former Republican Senate leader, said in a statement.

Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso slammed the resolution’s passage and said: “Senator Kane’s goal is not to make laws. It’s just a effort to undermine President Trump’s successful work to ensure the security of the northern border.”
He explained: “Speaker Johnson has announced Senator Kane’s resolution when he arrived in the House. “This meaningless messaging resolution will not prevent Senate Republicans from making American communities safer. ”

Due to its privileged nature, the resolution is required to be brought to the floor for a vote, and only a simple majority of 51 senators are required to pass.

Collins revealed on the floor earlier in the day that she would vote for the resolution.
Mr. President, Maine families will be incurred more and more, and every time they go to the grocery store, they will fill up gas tanks and if these tariffs take effect, they will fill up heating tanks.

Paul has been a voice critic of tariffs throughout his tenure, including during the Trump administration. He is a co-sponsor of Kane’s resolution.

“I think the trade tariffs on us and Canada will threaten the recession in our country. I think it’s a terrible idea economically and will lead to higher prices. Tariffs are just taxes. Republicans used to be conservatives, especially conservatives, especially against new taxes.”
