Wildfires are turning A threat is becoming increasingly common around the world. Record burns from Australia to Amazon to the United States are destroying the environment. It is estimated that the deadly wildfires raging in Los Angeles in January caused more than $250 billion in damage.
Current satellite images are usually low resolution, rarely updated, and small fires cannot be detected. But what if there was a way to spot wildfires earlier before they became angry?
Enter FireSat, which is a new satellite project Detect and track wildfires early. How early? The project aims to detect a fire of only 270 square feet (about the size of a classroom) in 20 minutes. It also was able to spot fires of two to three acres in size, about the size of two football fields.

this Firesat sign The satellite will be composed of more than 50 satellites when it is launched. The satellite is equipped with custom six-band, multi-spectral infrared cameras designed to capture images suitable for machine learning algorithms to accurately identify wildfires, distinguishing them from misleading objects such as chimneys.

Using artificial intelligenceFireSat quickly compared a location (regardless of where in the world) with previous images of that location, taking into account factors such as nearby infrastructure and local weather to determine if a fire broke out.
“Distinguishing real fire from random ‘noise’ in the environment is a challenge,” said Chris Van Arsdale, who works in climate and energy projects at Google.
The team even loaded the plane with sensors to experiment with their progress.
“When we first used the plane, one of our team members lit a barbecue and fire pit in his backyard so we could fly over the plane and test it,” said Erica Brand, one of Firesat’s project managers. “The sensor is able to pick it up.”

The first FireSat satellite has been launched. The entire constellation should be from 2030 to 2030. Satellite data will help with the history of fires worldwide so that scientists can better model and understand wildfire behavior.

Google Research and satellite maker Muon Space are starting partners Earth Fire Alliancea nonprofit firesat home. The first satellite of the constellation came in part from AI cooperatives: Wildfire, an initiative developed by Google.org, which convenes leading nonprofits, academic institutions, government agencies and companies around the common goal of using AI to prevent the devastating impact of wildfires.
As part of the AI collaboration, Google.org has provided $13 million to support the first satellite released on the Firesat constellation.
