On Friday, Google released API pricing for Gemini 2.5 Proan AI inference model with multiple benchmarks to measure coding, inference and math, has industry-leading performance.
For tips up to 200,000 tokens, the Gemini 2.5 Pro costs $10 per million input tokens (approximately 750,000 words, compared to the entire Lord of the Rings series) and $10 per million production tokens. For tips for over 200,000 tokens (not supported by most Google competitors), the Gemini 2.5 Pro is priced at $2.50 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens.
This pricing makes developers of Gemini 2.5 Pro more expensive than any other AI model currently offered by Google, including Gemini 2.0 Flash ($0.10/m input token, $0.40/m output token). It also makes the Gemini 2.5 Pro more expensive than several other cutting-edge AI models, such as OpenAI’s O3-Mini ($1.10/m input token, $4.40/m/m output token) and DeepSeek’s R1 ($0.55/m input token, $2.19/m output token).
To be fair, the Gemini 2.5 Pro is free to use and strictly limited, and is cheaper than some other highly competitive models, including Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 SONNET ($3/M input tokens, $15/m output tokens) and OpenAI’s GPT-4.5 ($75/M input tokens, $150/m Uptuffer of upting oftufe oftufe oftufe oftufe oftuce optufe oftuce/m uptuft ofupssens). The initial reaction of the technology industry To a large extent it is positivewith developers praising the speed they think is wise.
But broadly speaking, it seems that there is some upward pressure on the price of flagship models. The cost of the latest releases recently released by labs such as Google, OpenAI and Anthropic has been rising, not falling. For example, see OpenAI’s recent O1-Pro, the company’s most expensive API product, currently with an input token of $150/m and an output token of $600/m.
It could be that high demand and computing costs are driving the trend. According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, the Gemini 2.5 Pro is the company’s largest AI model among developers, resulting in This month alone, Google’s AI Studio platform and Gemini API usage increased by 80%.
