California Gov. Gavin Newsom broke away from his party in a discussion with Bill Maher on Friday, calling the Democratic brand “toxic” as it struggled with a struggling approval rating.
“This democratic brand is now toxic. Two weeks ago we had a very high watermark, which was CNN’s poll, the most favorable cute. In the NBC poll, it dropped to 27%,” Newsom said in “real time”.
Public approval of the Democratic Party has dropped to 29% in the latest CNN poll – the lowest approval recorded by polls since 1992. Polls find Democratic approval 20 points lower Republicans have approved 36% since January 2021.

The 27% approval rate of Democrats in the NBC poll was the lowest recorded since 1990. In both polls, a large number of Democrats and Democratic voters agreed, hoping that the party would take a stronger stance on President Donald Trump’s agenda.

Newsom recently made the headlines to launch the podcast “This is Gavin Newsom” with the governor of California seeking a conservative voice to interview. The governor started his podcast by interviewing Conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Former Trump confidante Steve Bannon and conservative talk radio host Michael Savage are also guests of the program.
“It’s one thing to make noise, but you have to make sense, too. I think this podcast and the opportunity to have a conversation with people I don’t agree with is an opportunity to try to find common ground instead of cheap shots,” Newsom said.
Maher challenged the governor the wrong side of the “eighty-five questions” – he argued that Democrats were disconnected from the vast majority of American voters, especially in transgender policy.
The “real-time” host claimed that the news agency passed a law that prevents schools from being asked to notify parents if their children claim to have changed their gender identity. The governor countered that he had passed only one law saying teachers who refused to inform parents could not be imprisoned. Newsom also uses the term “Snitch” to describe teachers, who tell parents that their children have reported changes in gender identity.

However, Newsom does call on Democrats to make mistakes when interacting with ordinary Americans. The governor said the party needs to “maturity” on separatist issues such as cancellation of culture and called on the left to not talk to everyday people.

“Democrats tend to be more judgment than we should be. Abolish this concept of culture, you’ve been living. You’ve been accepting for years and years.” “It’s true. Democrats need to do that. They have to mature with it.”
