A fugitive’s father killed nearly four years in a police gunfight in New Zealand on Monday Highly anticipated hunt.
According to local officials, Tom Phillips and his children disappeared into the Waikato wilderness shortly after a dispute with his children and his mother holding sole custody shortly before Christmas 2021.

At around 2:30 a.m. local time, police were alerted at a supply store in Piopio, a small town on the North Island, where Phillips is believed to have been hiding with his children.
When officers found the scene of the theft near two people riding four-wheeled bicycles, they suspected Phillips was involved and deployed a road nail interception on a nearby street to intercept them, according to a police press release.
Phillips opened fire at the officer and hit one in the upper body, causing him to be seriously injured. Police said they fired back and killed Phillips. The children who were walking with him were not injured and were detained, while the injured officer was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Later that afternoon, officers found the remaining two children, a boy and a girl, and a makeshift camp about a mile from the shooting scene. Officials said neither was hurt.
Authorities have long expressed concern about child welfare, saying they were raised in isolation without access to formal education or health care.
