Byrne starred in the series with Glenn Close, an incredible, dysfunctional duo. Close plays Patty Hewes, a powerful lawyer who hired Byrne’s Ellen Parsons to work in her law firm. Ellen, who just graduated from law school and had multiple offers, chose to work for Patty, although attorneys at a competing company warned Ellen not to get involved in Patty. Six months later, it was a glimpse of Allen’s future. The blood she was covered belonged to her boyfriend, who was killed and Allen was the main suspect.
As we try to solve this murder, Patty’s narcissistic ability manipulates the narcissistic ability of people and all court dramas, the show’s effective time jumps, all combined to create an incredible legal thriller. I even called Season 1 the perfect season for TV. As with truly great performances, quality tends to fluctuate over time – I have a short list of series whose perfect season first gives way to a drop in returns: Broadchurch, OC and Kill Eve Eve’s top rankings.
