The iPhone Air Reminds Me That I'm Just Not a Skinny Phone Girl

One of the biggest announcements Apple’s”Awesome Leave the “Special Event” Takes up the smallest space. After months of rumors, the company launched iPhone AirTo be touted as the slimest iPhone to date. When 5.6mm thin, it is also one of the slimmest phones in the world, with a size below 5.8mm Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge.

Despite its slender profile, the iPhone Air is a punch. Its 6.5-inch display is slightly larger than the 6.3-inch display of the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro. It features a 120Hz refresh rate, a titanium design and a promotional display for Apple’s new high-end A19 Pro processor.

Apple positioned the iPhone Air as a positioning between the $799 iPhone 17 and the $1,099 iPhone 17 Pro for $999. However, despite its functionality, I wasn’t excited in the iPhone air. This is why.

A rear camera is not enough

Apple has made some hardware tradeoffs with iPhone Air to reduce devices. iPhone Air has only one rear camera, not two rear cameras, which is smaller than the baseline iPhone and will match $599 iPhone 16e. Anyway, this is not a bad camera; it has a 48-megapixel fusion camera system that enables 28mm and 35mm focal lengths and 2x telephoto lenses.

Although Apple claims that this single camera can do two tasks, I still don’t believe it.

I have a dual camera iPhone since 2017 and I don’t think I can only return one more lens now. I know iPhone Air offers smart sensor cropping that simulates the 2x zoom appearance.

However, in daily use, I think I’ll miss the super camera, especially when shooting macro shots. I took a lot of food photos (don’t judge me) and it’s just something I’m used to. I’m not sure if a single camera iPhone would bring me the same level of detail, and it’s a tradeoff that I’d rather not just make for thinner shapes.

Battery life concerns

Another major issue I have with iPhone air is battery life. The potential major disadvantage of smaller phones is that they have a slightly smaller battery. According to Apple, the iPhone Air has advanced Apple silicon with “all-day battery life”. The company also said that the adaptive power feature in iOS 26 can help adjust iPhone performance based on usage modes, saving battery life.

However, none of this helped to alleviate my overall battery anxiety with a thinner phone. I’m the kind of person who likes to keep the phone battery as many places as possible (even if I know it’s not always the best practice for battery life), and I’d rather not carry the extra power bank with me if I don’t need it.

For me, a slightly clumsy phone deserves the extra battery life that passes. If the iPhone Air has roughly the same battery life as the baseline iPhone, I might have changed the tune, but for now, skeptical about me.

The fact that Apple has sold a slim Magsafe battery price is $99 Accompanying the iPhone air is an illustration. This kills a thin cell phone point.

I’m just a thin phone girl

Sorry, but the 5.6mm is too thin. I had the honor of playing with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge a few weeks ago, even though my taste was too easy. Slim phones seem too fragile to me, even though they are said to be durable. I always feel like I’m going to grab it in half. On top of that, contrary to the rest of the slim profile, the large camera bump on the top of the iPhone air looks a little ugly.

No matter how thin the phone is, I tend to tick a box on it, thus denying its slimness. I even added the weight of the phone by connecting to the PopSocket, which added its thickness and gave me an extra sense of security that the phone didn’t fly out of my hands. To be fair, I tend to carry my phone in a bag rather than in my pants’ pockets, so I don’t need a thinner phone. Honestly, I’m not even sure if Anyone even really asks for this.

Everything comes down to price

The iPhone Air costs $999, which is more expensive than the $799 iPhone 17 and cheaper than the $1,099 iPhone 17 Pro. Of course, the iPhone Air has a slightly larger screen and a faster processor, but in almost every other way, the base iPhone 17 is a better choice. It has two cameras, one camera, and one larger battery, again down $200. To me, it doesn’t make sense, why I’m not only getting the basic model.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro costs only $100, but comes with huge benefits like a third camera and a larger battery. If you can afford it, the iPhone 17 Pro may actually be worth the higher price.

iPhone air seems to be Apple’s outlook for the future. Obviously, this is a stage for a world sim that will completely eliminate Fold iPhone.

But that doesn’t mean I need to buy it at least.
